I dunno. I think the animals should worry. The Anthropocene is going to mean millions of species of things cease to exist because we’re changing the global climate.

GenX here. Kids enjoying doing kid things even if we don’t understand why they do that hurts no one? Keep it up, kids. You’re doing fine. No cap.
Start with Short Stories or novellas. A whole story from beginning to end in as short as 3 pages or as many as 30 or so. There are entire books of short stories (anthologies) in every genre you can imagine. You say you don’t have the patience. However, in the time its taken you to read this entire thread, you could have finished a short story. You’ve proven you have the patience.
Patron: Excuse me, what aisle could I find content on ‘god’s fury’?
Worker: That would be aisle 6.
Patron: oh, excuse me. I misspoke. What aisle could I find content on ‘furry gods’?
Worker: Oh, no worries! That would be aisle 8.
“Join the army they said…!”
There was some social commentary in that golden casino planet where the rich lived in excess while the poor barely got by (pay no attention to the Jabba behind the curtain)
Good world building, but it did nothing to move the story forward. The entire casino planet could have been cut and the story would be unchanged without any social or story impacts.
If they were going for social commentary, they could have set it up to find out that rebel weapons like the X-wing fighters and whatever macguffin they needed so save the main plot line were built by slave labor.
Semi-evil procurement character: “Yeah, I understand what you need. I can have it built in a day. Its an extremely toxic manufacturing process and because I’m not set up for that work, 20 or 30 slaves will die but thats no problem. Yeah, I can get it for you in the day you need it.”
They would have had to make a choice between save the slaves or getting the macguffin. They could have still chosen to not come away with the macguffin because they chose to save the slave labor and at least that would have given purpose to the whole distraction of that storyline.
And, of course, they cast minorities in leading roles!
I liked that part. John Boyega, among others, was a great actor. Kelly Marie Tran did as best she could with the bad writing.
“It doesn’t get any better than this!”
How did PCs beat out the Amiga, Mac and ST with nonsense like that?
I think you can ultimately blame Compaq. It was the first “pc clone” that showed the market that a PC not from expensive IBM was viable. After that even if you weren’t buying a Compaq your own generic clone was “good enough”. So You could access hardware and software built for a $4000 8088 IBM PC with your $1200 clone.
Amiga never was commodity hardware. It was always expensive. It didn’t get cheap enough fast enough. Amiga 500 came too late.
In the situation you’re presenting, I would be empathetic to her loss of the money and experience. However, all of that empathy disappears when she tries to sue because of it. The ridicule is for suing.
You can even see the stylized product icon with the simple facial features with the little square mustache. People in that timeline unironically refer to that CI tool as “The Final Solution” in CI.
“buck” is a common slang for a US Dollar. Its also a male deer. These are both very common words in American English. The “buck” in Starbucks doesn’t use either of these meanings, and thats fine, in this case you’re right that that part of Starbucks doesn’t carry any meaning from English…HOWEVER neither does “star” in Starbucks. The modern Starbucks logo has no star shapes in it, and nothing referencing astronomical stars. Its equal to “bucks” in that it is just a set of sounds. Yet in Mandarin, the “star” is literally translated as “star” like the astronomical body and spoken it sounds close to “sheen”, while the “bucks” sounds close to “bahcoo” for a total pronounced word of “sheenbahcoo”. So literal for the first part, phonetic for the second part. Essentially using two completely different sets of rules inside one word.
Its taught me all languages are broken in some way. Romance languages have words that have arbitrary gender needing conjugation. Some have two genders, some three! Then the Romanian language comes in with its own tricks.
Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) lack an alphabet so words are conjunctions of smaller words, or sometimes worse the phonetics of smaller words without the meaning of the word.
Starbucks (the coffee company) in Mandarin is 星巴克. 星 is the literal translation of Star. So far so good. However 巴 can mean “to hope”. 克 can mean “to restrain”. The reason they use 巴克 for the second half of Starbucks is that when you pronounce them they vaguely sound like “bahcoo” (buck). So the first half is the traditional use of direct translation ignoring what it sounds like phonetically, but the second half ignores direct translation and instead uses the phonetics of the second two characters to sound like “buck”.
You could accomplish what you’re trying by putting the GPU in a second computer. Further, most UPSes have a data interface, so that you could have the GPU computer plugged into the UPS too, but receive the signal when power is out, so it can save its work and shutdown quickly preserving power in the UPS batteries. The only concern there would be the max current output of the UPS in the event of a power outage being able to power both computers for a short time.
Lost technology of the ancients allowed them to make churros the size of city buses. Even with today’s most advanced science, we lack this ability.
Cross post this to dataisbeautiful.
“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is right now.”
Stop regretting what you didn’t do in the past, and do it now. Time will continue to march into the future irrespective of whatever actions you take. In another 20 years from now would you like to arrive there having accomplished many of your goals or accomplishing nothing?
There were two (firmware?) releases of the Dreamcast keyboard. The first release would allow TWO KEYBOARDS to be used with the game. The later release keyboard would only allow a single keyboard to be active at a time. It was a lot of fun yelling at your teammate to type faster, which of course made both players more flustered and do poorly.
I surprisingly good game! I also learned that my touch typing was decent, but not when zombie mobs are attacking me.
This is called Voluntary Nystagmus.
There’s a fantasy series that has part of this as a plot point. A normal person becomes god with all the godly powers but only for a very short time do they get ALL the power. Its overwhelming in the first few moments and they almost destroy the planet with a mere thought. They realize their mistake a few seconds later, but only have half the power by then, so they put in an ugly workaround, before most of their power runs out. Now that ugly workaround is just “life as we know it” on the planet for the people that live there.
This is a deep spoiler for a popular book series so I don’t want to post the series name and I don’t think we have a spoiler tag yet.
