They’re concealing their true nature, and get a bunch of naïve moderates to clean their image. Jobbik did it in Hungary first, it even lead to the radicals splitting out the party under Mi Hazánk Mozgalom (Our Homeland Movement - technically a satellite party and the “bad cops” of Fidesz), and the moderates rebranding as more boring conservatives. Fidesz learned this tactic, and used it to make Trianon Revisionism seem like a “common cause”. Gamergate also did it the first round, the second round was just a literal reaction against any kind of inclusivity. The republicans are also doing it of course: Their average voter isn’t as evil as it seems, they’re just the naïve loyal voters, who think even if things go bad, they can just be removed from legislation. Which is true, but it will be hard if democracy is dismantled like in Hungary, and even then you can’t unlegislate ruined lives, the dead from their graves, the lost years people had to endure because of bad laws and no worker’s protections.

I think Trump will declare a state of emergency as soon as people will riot against his unjust laws. Project 2025 has something about deploying the military against the population to force through deeply unpopular laws.

Centralized platforms are also prone to the same kind of attacks. Kiwifarms and especially its users’ offshoot Discord and Matrix chatrooms are good example for this. Hell, even 4chan was infamous for organizing troll campaigns, first just “4 teh lulz”, then people turned the site into their personal army.

Basically it is going the following way:

• Company gets AI to do stuff.
• Company fires its workforce.
• AI isn’t up to the task, and often disliked by people, see its unpopularity in the arts.
• Company has to rehire staff, first to try to salvage the AI’s output, then to just go back to the good old days of human creativity.

AI isn’t magic, no matter how much techbros try to humanize the technology because NeuRAl nEtWOrKs.

There’s a pretty good argument for that in a lot of other cases too, however those on the top doesn’t want it, or at least not in a sensible way, see the whole “UBI through stock exchange” and “Universal Basic Compute” fiasco.

Deal with them just like regular trolls. You shouldn’t be like the Muskrat cultists who think content moderation is useless and thus should be given up on. I understand, I suffered from activism burnout on the regular (one was right in the middle of an election campaign), but one should not give up easily.

I personally left Twitter, since it not only diminished my reach thanks to the implementation of Twitter Blue, but also was an increasingly toxic place (and it begin with being a toxic place in the first place, thanks to algorithms), which didn’t bring the best out of me.

A lot of troll accounts are semi-automated. They run a script that detects certain keywords, and posts premade replies to them (nowadays said premade replies are being finetuned with generative AI to look less uniform), also a human is watching over them to ensure both correct operation and to overtake in case of emergency.

Source: My father’s ex-girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend was (is) a paid online troll for Fidesz. They also had Discord (later Matrix if I recall) servers for organizing mass reports, downvotes, angry/haha react campaigns, often they also did some “private doxxing”.

That’s a single instance, they can be blocked and avoided. The FOSS community is way more resiliant to enshittification.

However, a lot of companies dropped headphone jacks, because they could both save a buck on them, make them even more slightly thinner to the point it starts to impact usability, and create a market for 3rd party accessories (wireless head/earphones, converters, etc.).

And then three things happened at once

1. Creative de-facto monopolized the industry often by unethical means (suing Aureal into bankruptcy, etc.), not letting much room for competitors, which in turn lead to diminishing quality on the part of Creative.
2. Microsoft didn’t put hardware acceleration support into XAudio, which superseeded DirectSound.
3. Game publishers realized the vast majority of gamers didn’t care about sound quality, so they could spent those resources on making the games look a little bit more realistic.
